A licensed cannabis dispensary in Sacramento has become the first retail outlet in California’s regulated marijuana market to receive state approval for a self-service checkout system, marking a notable step in the industry’s adoption of retail technology.
Perfect Union Northside, one of 10 California dispensaries operated by MWG Holdings Group, announced that state regulators have authorized the continued use of its radio-frequency identification, or RFID, checkout platform. The company said it recently received confirmation from the state Department of Cannabis Control that the system satisfies the state’s regulatory requirements and can remain in operation.
According to MWG Holdings, the technology was developed by Exo Solutions and underwent a detailed review by the DCC before gaining approval. During the evaluation, regulators confirmed that the platform functioned correctly alongside the dispensary’s POS software and Metrc, the track-and-trace program used across California’s legal marijuana market to monitor products from cultivation through final sale.
Tom Sheridan, chief executive of MWG Holdings, said the company views the approval as an important milestone for cannabis retailing. He noted that introducing RFID-based self-checkout is intended to make the purchasing process quicker and more convenient for customers while also giving employees stronger oversight of inventory and improving store security.
Unlike conventional barcode scanners that process one item at a time, the RFID platform can recognize multiple products simultaneously. The technology is also designed to strengthen efforts aimed at preventing product loss and improving stock management.
The state’s approval suggests that key compliance challenges associated with automated checkout, including customer age verification, inventory reporting, and integration with California’s mandatory tracking system, can be addressed within existing regulations. These issues have long been viewed as obstacles to introducing self-service purchasing in cannabis stores.
Although self-checkout has become common in pharmacies, grocery stores, and many major retail chains, similar systems have rarely appeared in marijuana dispensaries. Publicly available examples of licensed cannabis retailers using comparable technology remain limited across the United States.
Other convenience-focused retail approaches have seen broader adoption in some legal cannabis markets. States including Vermont, Colorado, Florida, and Nevada permit certain forms of drive-thru marijuana sales under their respective regulations.
California currently does not generally allow cannabis businesses to operate drive-thru service. However, proposed legislation recently advanced by a state Senate committee would give local governments the authority to approve drive-thru sales for licensed dispensaries within their jurisdictions if the measure ultimately becomes law.
The reforms being discussed in California to make marijuana shopping more convenient for customers are likely to be welcomed by the wider marijuana industry, including enterprises like Aurora Cannabis Inc. (NASDAQ: ACB) (TSX: ACB), given that those changes seek to offer buyers the same experience that they get while shopping for other products.
