Foreign Companies Could Tap into Germany’s Marijuana Pilot Programs

Non-German companies could potentially benefit from new recreational marijuana pilot programs in Germany, observers say. The European nation partially decriminalized adult-use cannabis on April 1, 2024, becoming the 9th country in the world to legalize cannabis and granting millions of Germans access to the drug. Interestingly, Germany's recreational cannabis measures also allow foreign companies to enter the German market via a cannabis pilot program license. These entities would need approval from the German municipality where they would set up shop. Furthermore, they have to prove that their pilot program had a scientific or experimental component to receive a pilot program…

Recent Scientific Findings Altering Our Knowledge about Marijuana

While around one in every five Americans now use marijuana, the understanding of its health effects has historically been limited. However, as regulations surrounding cannabis ease, scientists are gaining new insights into its benefits and risks. Many believe it’s a safe and natural option for managing pain, muscle spasms, nausea, appetite issues, and PTSD. While research supports this, cannabis isn’t as risk-free as some assume. With fewer barriers to conducting research on the drug, scientists are uncovering potential long-term impacts on mental health, the lungs, the digestive system, and the heart. Still, much remains unknown due to limited studies. Let’s…

Ohio’s Recreational Marijuana Market Stands Out as the Only One Launched This Year

In a year that will go down in history as one of the quietest for state-level marijuana market launches in the U.S., Ohio's adult-use market stood out with the only launch of 2024. Ohio debuted its recreational cannabis market on August 6, making it the only state to unveil a new cannabis market in the U.S. this year. This marks a significant departure from a young industry that has gone through non-stop market expansion for more than 10 years. Unfortunately, Ohio's recreational marijuana market launch wasn't as successful as previous launches. The state recorded a sales dip right after it…

New York Regulators Consider Limiting the Issuance of Marijuana Retail Licenses

New York state marijuana regulators are considering whether they should temporarily cap the number of marijuana retail licenses to 1,600. According to a statement from Cannabis Advisory Board (CAB) chair Joseph Belluck, the Cannabis Advisory Board sent the suggestion to cap state retail licenses to the Cannabis Control Board (CCB). The CCB’s suggestion is nonbinding and it will be up to the Cannabis Control Board to take steps and facilitate the temporary cap on licenses. New York's regulated cannabis industry is still in its infancy after the state legalized marijuana in March 2021 and began adult-use sales before the end…

420 with CNW — Portugal Looks Forward to Standing Out as a Medical Marijuana Hub

Portugal is rapidly emerging as a leading center for medical marijuana in Europe. Its mild, temperate, subtropical environment, frequently likened to that of California, makes it an excellent location for cultivating cannabis. “No other European country offers better environmental conditions,” said Martins of FAI Therapeutics, a Portuguese pharmaceutical firm. Located near the hills of Serpa, surrounded by cork oaks and olive trees, FAI Therapeutics’ 13.3-acre farm produces approximately 30 tons of marijuana flowers annually. The operation began in 2022 following a surge of interest from international marijuana producers drawn to Portugal’s ideal climate and supportive legislation. Currently, over 60 companies…

US Marijuana Research is Witnessing an Evolving Landscape

The nascent cannabis research field recently hit a major milestone after the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) finally greenlit Phase 2 of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) study on the feasibility of using smoked cannabis to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in veterans. The authorization came after three years of discussion between the FDA and MAPS.  Titled MJP2, the study will test the efficacy and safety of inhaling high-THC cannabis in managing PTSD symptoms in veterans compared to a placebo. Nearly 320 veterans from Michigan and three additional states will take part in the study. The Michigan…

Marijuana Users Spend Fewer Days in Hospital for Epilepsy, Study Finds

A new study has found that marijuana users with epilepsy typically spend fewer days in the hospital for epilepsy-related issues compared to people with epilepsy who didn't use cannabis. Data from the study shows that epileptic individuals who used cannabis had an elevated epilepsy event capturability rate and reduced hospital stays. Although medical and recreational marijuana is legal across dozens of states, research into the drug's potential medical benefits is still in its infancy. Oliver Hoerth from Mayo Clinic’s Department of Neurology's Division of Epilepsy says the researchers determined that they needed more information about how THC, the main psychoactive…

Mass. Officials Announce Plan to Authorize Cannabis Social Consumption Sites

Last week, the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission unveiled the proposed regulatory framework for the social consumption of marijuana. The state legalized the social consumption of marijuana in 2016, via the same ballot measure that legalized the recreational use of the drug. Initially, the commission had planned to implement regulations for social consumption in 2018. This was stalled following pressure from critics but now, a few years later, the plan is going into motion. The recently proposed framework has three different types of licenses; An event organizer license, which covers the consumption of marijuana at events like festivals that are held…

Marijuana Growers in California Hail 2024 Harvest Season

Marijuana farmers in the state of California revealed that the weather during this year’s growing season was favorable, which may improve yields and in turn, prices. Judi Nelson, co-founder of Sol Spirit Farm, revealed that the summer was good for them, noting that moisture from spring rain prevented wildfires. The overall threat of wildfires was low this year for cannabis farmers, which allowed them to focus on their crops more. In the last couple of years, these fires have greatly impacted farmers, with some experiencing extensive crop loss. Flower from Sol Spirit is primarily sold in the firm’s compostable packaging,…
