Bipartisan Senators in Florida Blame DeSantis for Using Taxpayer Funds to Oppose Cannabis Measure

Bipartisan senators in Florida are criticizing Gov. DeSantis for using taxpayer funds to finance anti-cannabis advertisements opposing a measure to legalize cannabis. This news was first brought to the public by an independent journalist, Jason Garcia, who commented on the possible use of the opioid funds for cannabis-related public service announcements. Soon after, reports from the Tampa Bay Times confirmed that state funds from a settlement fund to help alleviate the opioid crisis were allocated to a 3rd party marketing firm for ads. This is despite the fact that the settlement’s terms specifically state that the funds are meant to…

Could This Third Attempt to Legalize Adult-Use Marijuana in North Dakota Succeed?

Campaigners who managed to put a measure to legalize adult-use marijuana in North Dakota know that success isn’t done and dusted. The voters have rejected similar measures in the recent past; in 2022 and also back in 2018. Those working to enact marijuana policy reforms know that they have to do things differently in order to ensure that their third attempt is the charm. Steve Bakken, who heads the group that is working to see Measure 5 get voter approval next month, says they must be careful to avoid creating the impression among voters that should marijuana prohibition end, a…

Research Finds That Medical Cannabis Boosts the Mental Health of Older People

New research has found that legally available medical cannabis has helped improve the mental health of individuals aged 65 and above. For their research, the investigators at the National Bureau of Economic Research utilized geographic data to determine the availability effects of medical marijuana dispensaries on self-reported mental health in the state of New York. They found that living half an hour away from dispensaries reduced the probability of having poor mental health day for individuals in this age group by roughly 10%. They partly attributed this positive health impact to pain relief. This aligns with research from the Cato…

Marijuana Regulators Withhold Certification from Social-Equity License Winners

The state of Missouri recently awarded social-equity cannabis dispensary licenses to lucky lottery winners. Among them was David Huckins, a disabled veteran who learned in June that he’d be receiving 1 of 57 microbusiness licenses that the state stipulated would be awarded to disadvantaged business owners. Those who fit this description include disabled veterans, individuals with nonviolent cannabis offenses and those with lower incomes. This program is part of the constitutional amendment to legalize the recreational use of cannabis that voters approved in 2022. Under the amendment, the program would award 33 wholesale licenses for cultivation facilities and 24 dispensary…

Research Explores How Adult-Use Legalization in Canada Affects Medical Marijuana

On Oct. 17, 2018, the Canadian government legalized the recreational use of marijuana. Given the legislation’s upcoming sixth anniversary, one researcher believes the time has come to assess how the process has impacted the medical marijuana market. Associate professor Michael Armstrong, who specializes in operations research, conducted a new study demonstrating that while recreational legalization did see fewer patients remain in the medical market, the medical program is still running. Armstrong reveals that following recreational legalization, many individuals left the medical marijuana system, some of whom shouldn’t have been there in the first place. Data from the study reveals that…

420 with CNW — Arkansas Disqualifies Medical Cannabis Amendment for November Poll

John Thurston, Arkansas secretary of state, has rejected a proposed amendment aimed at broadening access to medical cannabis. The organization had been given an additional 30 days to collect more signatures but ultimately fell short of the required 90,074 valid signatures. According to Thurston, only 10,521 of the signatures collected throughout the extended period were verified as legitimate. When added to the previously accepted signatures, the total reached 88,040, falling…

Minnesota’s Medical Marijuana Industry Could Be Impacted by Launch of Recreational Sales

In May 2023, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed House File 100 into law, legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in the state. The law went into effect on Aug. 1, 2023, making it legal for Minnesotans to use, possess and grow marijuana in the state. The state is about three months away from allowing retailers to sell and purchase recreational marijuana. Experts expect the medical marijuana industry to be negatively affected if transitions in other states are anything to go by. Data from the Cannabis Regulatory Agency in Michigan shows that in August 2024, medical-marijuana sales totaled about $1.2 million,…

Kentucky Issues First Medical Cannabis Business License

Last week, the state of Kentucky awarded the first license for its medical marijuana program to KCA Labs. The state legalized medical marijuana in March 2023, following the signing of SB 47 into law by Governor Andy Beshear. SB 47 legalized the use of medical marijuana for individuals suffering from various debilitating diseases, including multiple sclerosis, cancer, epilepsy, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic nausea and chronic pain.
