New data released by the state of Kentucky shows that almost 5,000 applications were submitted by businesses in the state to acquire licenses to sell medical cannabis. This comes after the state legalized medical marijuana for Kentuckians with different debilitating illnesses in March 2023, when SB 47 was signed into law by Governor Andy Beshear. The application period for those who wished to participate in the state’s medical marijuana program ran from July 1 to Aug. 31, 2024, with 88% of the applications coming in during the last four days. Harris Campaign Pokes at Trump’s ‘Flip-Flopping’ on Marijuana Policy

Recently, VP Kamala Harris’ campaign penned a memo criticizing former president Donald Trump for boldly flip-flopping on various issues, including cannabis reform. In the memo, the campaign accused Trump of making things up just months before the election. This comes after Trump indicated in a social media post that he supported a ballot initiative that would legalize the recreational use of cannabis in the state of Florida, where he resides. In his statement, the former president requested that the state legislature ban the use of cannabis in public spaces, then he added that individuals need not be termed as criminals…

Study Suggests Marijuana Ingredient Prevents Brain Aging

New research has found that administering THC may be effective in preventing brain aging in the long-term. THC is one of the two primary components found in marijuana; the other is  CBD. Researchers determined that administering low doses of delta-9 THC over a long period of time had an anti-aging effect on the brain as it restored synapse densities and cognitive abilities. For their study, the researchers used young and old male mice, aged between 4 to 18 months old. The mice received either a placebo or THC for about a month, with researchers measuring their brain function and protein…

Marijuana Growers Have Options Despite Inability to Use ‘Organic’ Product Label

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is in charge of certifying products as organic. This certification, created more than two decades ago, is what allows businesses to use the word “organic” on their products. The certification of marijuana products as organic is currently up for debate. Some stakeholders agree that the U.S. Department of Agriculture can’t certify any product that is illegal under federal law. Despite the fact that 38 states have legalized the medical use of marijuana while 24 have legalized the drug’s recreational use, the drug is still classified under schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. Drugs under…

Stores in Southwest Virginia Openly Sell Marijuana

In Virginia, medical and recreational marijuana is legal, although retail sales and recreational marijuana dispensaries haven’t yet been launched following delays with the approval of a re-enactment clause. However, residents in the southwest region of the state can still access the drug easily, with many stores openly selling the substance. This is despite some of these businesses being raided by law enforcement last year. The sale of marijuana in this part of the country is surprising, especially since the stores are in the most conservative parts of Virginia. There’s at least one marijuana store in Tazewell County and another in…

Measure Legalizing Medical Cannabis Takes Effect in Ukraine

As of last week, medical cannabis was legal in Ukraine. This comes about half a year after President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the medical marijuana bill into law, making access to these drugs easier so soldiers could address the mental and physical wounds incurred during the country’s ongoing war with Russia, which invaded Ukraine more than two years ago. In an update on the new policy, the Ministry of Health stated that marijuana, along with its extracts, resin and tinctures, were excluded from the list of possibly dangerous substances. Prior to this, the drug’s circulation was banned, but now it’s permitted…

California Regulators Withdraw Testing Lab License over Forged Results

Late last month, regulators in California withdrew the license of a cannabis testing laboratory. This development comes after it was determined that the lab tampered with equipment and faked test results so it could provide passing test results to marijuana products that were possibly contaminated with mold and dangerous pesticides. In 2022, the state’s Department of Cannabis Control found that California Cannabis Testing Labs engaged in activities that posed a threat to public health. According to its report, the department rejected the company’s application for an annual license and withdrew its provisional license as well. A notice issued last month…

Research Shows Marijuana Could Lower Opioid Use

Patients with opioid-use disorder often must go above and beyond to access life-saving drugs such as methadone and suboxone as well as naloxone, the drug that reverses overdoses. In the last 10 years, opioid overdose mortality rates have increased significantly, mainly because of fentanyl in the illicit drug trade in America. Now, a new study has determined that marijuana may help reduce the use of opioids or even stop their use completely. The study was led by Sid Ganesh, a PhD student at the School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC). For their study, the researchers interviewed 30 individuals…
