420 with CNW — How Educational Institutions Are Embracing Legal Marijuana

As the cannabis sector continues to expand, universities and colleges across the U.S. are adjusting their academic offerings to keep pace with a growing need for trained professionals. The industry currently supports an estimated 425,000 full-time positions nationwide.

This has prompted higher education institutions to introduce targeted programs that prepare graduates for roles in medical use, product innovation, regulatory compliance, cultivation, and retail operations.

Cannabis-focused education is no longer limited to a handful of schools. Instead, a wide network of institutions now offers courses and certifications designed to align with the demands of this evolving field.

A major contributor to this shift is Green Flower, a company specializing in cannabis education and workforce development. It has formed partnerships with 45 universities and colleges, helping deliver certificate programs that have already reached roughly 10,000 students.

One such partner, the University of New England (UNE) in Maine, opted to collaborate rather than build its own curriculum from the ground up. Ed Cervone, who oversees strategic partnerships at the university, said the decision was practical. Building a program internally would have required significant time and resources. By contrast, Green Flower provides ready-made content that evolves alongside industry trends.

“They bring the expertise, and we connect it to our audience,” Cervone explained, noting that course material is updated frequently to reflect current market conditions.

According to Green Flower chief executive Max Simon, most participants are transitioning from other careers. He estimates that about 70% of students use the programs to enter the cannabis field, while the remaining 30% are already employed in the sector and seeking advancement.

Programs are often adapted to reflect regional realities. In Maine, where marijuana is legal, UNE offers online certificates lasting eight or 16 weeks. These courses are designed to support local business needs, from growing operations to patient-focused services.

Beyond coursework, Green Flower has introduced a career resource hub for graduates. The platform offers tools such as resume support, continuing education, and connections to employers, including iAnthus and Curaleaf. This also provides businesses with a steady stream of trained candidates.

At iAnthus, leadership sees education as essential. The company is currently training 150 workers to strengthen their understanding of retail, cultivation, and production practices. The company also uses Green Flower’s certifications as part of its hiring strategy, identifying candidates who have completed certified coursework.

Meanwhile, Denver’s Metropolitan State University developed its own cannabis program through its School of Hospitality. Guided by input from industry leaders, the curriculum combines business fundamentals with cannabis-specific knowledge. Courses cover areas such as supply chain management, compliance, entrepreneurship, and marketing.

Professor Shannon Donnelly, who leads the program, said the goal is to prepare students for long-term careers by blending academic instruction with practical insight. The university also emphasizes accessibility and equity, aiming to create opportunities for individuals affected by past drug policies.

As more higher education institutions start offering programs geared at preparing employees to work in the marijuana industry, companies like SNDL Inc. (NASDAQ: SNDL) are unlikely to face talent shortages as was the case when the industry was just taking off.
