420 with CNW — Study Finds Smoking CBD-Rich Cannabis Doesn’t Impact Driving Ability

Over the past couple of years, cannabis has experienced a surge in popularity partly due to its purported medical abilities. As territories around the world started legalizing cannabis and hemp, reports of the controversial plant’s medical efficacy spread far and wide. Cannabidiol, one of the chemical compounds produced by plants in the cannabis family, has attracted most of this attention thanks to its potent medical properties. Unlike THC, the main psychoactive agent in marijuana, CBD does not intoxicate users or slow their mental and physical reactions.

A pilot study from Switzerland sought to find out whether there was a connection between smoking CBD-rich marijuana and reduced driving ability. The study found that there was “no significant impact” on the driving ability of its participants. Furthermore, there were no negative effects on vital signs, even though all the study participants had more THC in their blood than the legal limit allowed. This corroborates what we already know about CBD: it is not psychoactive, and it may reduce THC’s ability to intoxicate users.

The Swiss study comprised 33 participants who were each given a joint with 500 mg of tobacco and either 500 mg of placebo or 500 mg of CBD-rich cannabis. The placebo contained a cannabinoid-free, nicotine-free herbal mixture with a hemp aroma called Knaster Hemp while the CBD-rich marijuana contained 15.5% CBD and 0.9% THC.

After taking either the placebo or CBD-rich cannabis, the participants were taken through a variety of common DUI tests. Researchers concluded that there was no correlation between smoking CBD-rich cannabis flower and reduced driving ability, with study participants who smoked both CBD and the placebo experiencing zero decline in motor time, reaction time, concentration, performance or behavior under stress.

Some of the tests the researchers employed include psychological assessments such as reaction tests, a determination assessment that analyzed participants’ reactions under complex stimulus as well as a Cognitrone test. While there were no significant differences in reaction time after the participants smoked both CBD-rich cannabis and the placebo, there was a difference in reaction and motor time between the men and women regardless of whatever they consumed. However, there was no difference between the male and female participants in the determination test.

Researchers from the University of Bern’s Institute of Forensic Medicine say that although all study participants had enough THC in their blood to cause the symptoms of impairment, they did not exhibit any symptoms. They believe this is the first-ever study to investigate the potential ramifications of smoking cannabidiol-rich marijuana on road safety.

This study proves that consuming CBD-rich cannabis products from licensed marijuana companies such as Red White & Bloom Brands Inc. (CSE: RWB) (OTCQX: RWBYF) is unlikely to put drivers at risk, but caution is still required as a lot more isn’t yet fully understood about how various cannabis compounds affect one’s ability to drive safely.
