420 with CNW — Connecticut Governor Launches Education Campaign on Responsible Marijuana Consumption

Earlier this week, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont announced that the state was launching an education campaign promoting the responsible use of marijuana by adults. The campaign contains resources that cover how to safely store and dispose of marijuana and marijuana waste, as well as what to do in case a child or even a pet ingests marijuana accidentally. These resources, which include brochures, videos, social media graphics and flyers, can be accessed by any individual. They can also be downloaded for free on the state’s ct.gov/cannabis website.

These materials were created by the state’s Department of Consumer Protection in collaboration with the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and the Department of Public Health. Marijuana and nonmarijuana business owners, community health organizations, medical facilities and others that would like to promote responsible and safe marijuana practices in their communities are encouraged to use these materials.

Gov. Lamont stated that protecting public health included providing individuals with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions that would keep their families safe. He further noted that the government resources were focused on educating the public about the steps they could take to protect themselves as well as their families from overconsumption and accidental ingestion, adding that the information encouraged adults who chose to use cannabis products to do so in a responsible way.

Michelle H. Seagull, commissioner of the Department of Consumer Protection, stated that the department felt it was important to educate the public about the safety and health measures they could take to store, use and dispose of marijuana products responsibly as the state works towards launching retail sales. Seagull added that agency believed that a successfully regulated marijuana market included empowered and educated consumers, in particular those who had children in their homes.

Nancy Navaretta, commissioner for the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, stated that the department shared Consumer Protection’s commitment to providing information to residents in the state, as this would ensure informed and safe choices regarding adult marijuana use. Navaretta added that the agency had a history of partnering with community and state stakeholders to promote healthy choices and communities as well as prevent substance misuse.

The Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services plans to launch a multimedia campaign this fall, which will educate the public about state laws associated with marijuana. The campaign will also educate the public on the potential impacts of marijuana, and will include print media, outdoor, social media, radio and television.

When the adult-use market finally opens, residents and visitors to Connecticut will for the first time have the opportunity to buy legally sourced recreational marijuana. This will be akin to what people in markets where entities such as American Cannabis Partners now take as the norm.
