420 with CNW — Medical Cannabis Tours to Be Held in Various Thai Provinces

The Public Health and the Tourism and Sports ministries have laid the foundation that will be used to begin the first medical cannabis tour in Southeast Asia come 2021. The country’s tourism and sports minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn explained that the tour’s objective was to grow awareness of cannabis and its medicinal properties as well as to inform individuals who are interested in cultivating the plant about the legislations.

Various provinces with plantations that may be part of the tour include Chon Buri, Buri Ram, Phatthalung, Nakohn Ratchasima, Samut Songkhram, Sakon Nakhon, Mae Hong Son and Lampang.

Ratchakitprakarn explained that, in its early stages, the program’s objective would be to educate locals who might be interested in developing a community enterprise and becoming authorized marijuana cultivators. The project would provide the knowledge that locals are required to have; anyone perusing the information can gain an appreciation for at least a basic understanding of cannabis and its medical and economic benefits. He added that the Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine Department would be working in collaboration with the tourism department in promoting medical tourism, including cannabis and herbs for traditional medicine.

The two departments signed a memorandum of understanding that highlights their goal to stimulate both foreign and Thai markets by promoting and developing these tour routes. Phiphat explained that the cooperation between the two departments would help locals generate new sources of revenue with better skills and knowledge of herbal tourism and cannabis.

Earlier in August, the cabinet had given the green light to a proposal to modify the Narcotics Act. The amendments would allow farmers and private medical practitioners to cultivate cannabis for medical treatment. This move came after controlled legalization of cannabis was granted in 2018 with medical marijuana being legalized in 2019 February. This made Thailand the first nation in Southeast Asia to permit individuals who sought permission to cultivate marijuana and state agencies alike to do so, as long as they followed government agency regulations. Despite these positive developments, however, the use of cannabis for recreational purposes is prohibited in Thailand.

Phiphat also revealed that the government was organizing a marijuana exhibition that would be held in Buri Ram in October 2021. The expo, which attracts international buyers and sellers, could help grow Thailand’s position as a cannabis medical center in the Buri Ram region. The event had originally been scheduled for 2020 but had to be postponed following the global coronavirus outbreak. Every process involved in marijuana, including the regulations governing the plant, its cultivation and ways to earn revenue for marijuana farming, should be showcased during the tour.

While the medical cannabis industry in Thailand is still new, Canada’s medical and recreational cannabis industries are reaching maturity with many firms distinguishing themselves from the rest. For instance, Pure Extracts Technologies Corp. (CSE: PULL) can be described as the leader in extracting marijuana compounds as it not only executes extraction operations for itself but also for other licensed players inside and outside the Canadian marijuana sector.
