420 with CNW — Research Finds CBD Oil Can Prolong Shelf Life of Strawberries

A recent study tested the effects of CBD oil in preserving strawberries after they’ve been harvested. Test results discovered that CBD oil was effective in helping maintain the strawberries’ visual appearance, helping them to stay fresher for longer. The study, which was conducted by researchers from the University of South Florida, will be published in the “Postharvest Biology and Technology” journal.

In the study, researchers explain that the microbial load and visual quality of the strawberries were evaluated before and during storage. Fruit that was treated with CBD oil was found to have a decreased microbial load, which resulted in less yeast production and mold. Despite the study’s main focus being strawberries, its findings reveal that CBD oil has the potential to be used in fresh produce as an antimicrobial treatment.

The researchers stored the strawberries treated with CBD oil at 1º C for eight days and 10º C for eight days to assess the extended freshness. Their findings show that CBD oil could be used to extend the shelf life of strawberries and could be used by consumers in their homes as an antimicrobial treatment.

However, the study also notes that there are uncertainties that surround the use of cannabidiol as a food additive as well as the benefits and science that support its use in food formulations, as there are no federal regulations for CBD oil. This may change, however, as the FDA continues to introduce rules for the cannabis compound.

Under the appropriations laws that were passed in 2019, the Food and Drug Administration was mandated to give an update on its CBD regulatory approach, which it did earlier in March of this year. In the years since hemp was legalized, the administration has been utilizing enforcement discretion and continues to give public notices about recalls, in addition to providing warnings to marijuana businesses that may be providing false claims to the public, such as one company that claimed that CBD could be used to cure or treat Covid-19.

Earlier in July, the agency also presented a report on the state of the CBD market to Congress. The report highlights the studies that the FDA has conducted on the quality and contents of marijuana-derived products that it has tested in the last six years. In the same month, an FDA congressional spending bill that included a clause allocating funding to help establish a framework for CBD product regulation was released.

Apart from developing regulations for cannabis products that contain cannabidiol, the FDA is also looking to grant a contract to help study cannabidiol.

In different jurisdictions within the United States, regulated cannabis markets are booming. For example, Gage Cannabis Co. set up shop in Michigan, and the company has established itself as one of the top brands in that state.
