Illinois has expanded its medical cannabis program to cover chronic pain linked to polycystic ovary syndrome, commonly known as PCOS, as well as pain caused by sickle cell disease.
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced last Tuesday that physicians can now certify patients with either condition for medical marijuana treatment. The change took effect immediately, allowing eligible patients to seek cannabis as part of their care.
The department said the decision followed an extensive assessment conducted by the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board and IDPH staff. Both conditions were added to Illinois’ list of approved debilitating medical conditions after officials reviewed available medical evidence and scientific research.
Under state law, IDPH is responsible for examining petitions seeking the addition of medical conditions to the program. The department considers scientific findings and published medical literature when determining whether cannabis could be an appropriate treatment option.
IDPH Director Sameer Vohra said the agency intends to work with healthcare professionals to help patients obtain access safely and appropriately.
PCOS is a hormonal disorder that can affect metabolism, reproductive function, skin health and mental well-being. It is associated with hormonal imbalances and can cause a range of symptoms, including pelvic discomfort and other forms of chronic pain. The condition affects millions of women around the world.
Sickle cell disease, meanwhile, is a group of inherited disorders affecting red blood cells. People with the condition can experience severe episodes of pain, along with anemia, tiredness, swelling, infections and damage to organs. Pain crises are among the most significant complications associated with the disease.
According to IDPH, cannabis may help ease persistent pain experienced by people living with both conditions. The agency’s decision therefore gives qualifying patients another potential option for managing symptoms.
Illinois already permits medical marijuana for a broad range of health conditions. The approved list includes endometriosis, Crohn’s disease, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, ovarian cysts, post-traumatic stress disorder and fibromyalgia.
The expansion comes as states continue to assess which medical conditions may qualify for cannabis-based treatment. Illinois officials said the latest additions were made after reviewing the available evidence rather than through an automatic expansion of the program.
Patients with newly eligible conditions must still receive certification from an authorized medical provider before accessing cannabis through the state’s medical program. The addition of the two conditions does not mean cannabis is required or appropriate for every patient, and treatment decisions remain between individuals and their healthcare providers.
