Insights of the U.S Pot Consumers Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

The global pandemic coronavirus pushed people to stock up on goods when global leaders started to implement national lockdown to limit the spread of the virus.

While the average person stocks up on food, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and face masks, others stock up on marijuana. How many of them did so for medical purposes? What about recreational?

A study conducted by the AmericanMarijuana.org involved 990 survey takers of the U.S. marijuana consumers and their purpose, usage, and preferred activity to perform at home during the quarantine or also known as “shelter in place” in some areas.

U.S Marijuana Consumers’ Priorities During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Even though marijuana is now state-level legal in some form across all 50 states in the U.S., most of the consumers would still rather stock up on items that are more important such as food, face masks, hand sanitizers, and toilet papers.

However, out of the 990 survey takers, 50 (5%) of them would rather stock up on marijuana than food. Even though toilet paper may just be as important as food, only 168 (17%) of the survey takers value marijuana more.

Face masks and hand sanitizers are very important things these days as it keeps us safe from contamination of the coronavirus.

But only 277 (28%) of the survey takers feel the need to choose marijuana products over face masks. Similarly to the case of toilet papers, only 149 (15%) of them find marijuana more valuable than hand sanitizers.

Now, what could be the reason why some of them are so desperate to choose marijuana over the said necessary items?

According to the survey findings, 548 (55.39%) of them stocked up on marijuana products to calm themselves down amidst the pandemic chaos while only 228 (23.03%) of them did so in fear of stock shortage. The remaining 214 (21.6%) of them didn’t care about the COVID-19 outbreak at all and just wanted to stock just so they could “chill”.

Cannabis and Quarantine

Knowing that a handful of U.S. marijuana consumers did stock up on cannabis products, let’s look at what activities they would rather do indoors with all these items at their disposal.

Surprisingly, only 165 (16.67%) of them would smoke weed, just next to the least activity preferred, which is to do indoor exercises/sports, with only 133 (13.43%).

The internet may be the only portal to the outside world but only 149 (15.05%) of them preferred surfing the internet while 265 (26.77%) would rather cook, play music, and do other hobbies instead.

Still, most of them or 278 (28.08%) would just binge-watch TV shows should they be asked to stay indoors during the coronavirus outbreak.

With so much more than they could take daily, how did this affect their intake on cannabis products? Did they use/consume more marijuana products since the coronavirus virus outbreak?

Out of the 990 survey takers, 335 (33.84%) of them did consume more cannabis products while the remaining 655 (66.16%) said they consumed their usual dosage.

When it comes to the sentiment of things as a whole, 537 (54.24%) are calm about the situation and believe that everything will be alright while 399 (40.20%) are worried sick about the growing number of active coronavirus cases worldwide. Surprisingly, 55 (5.56%) just don’t care about the global pandemic at all.
