420 with CNW – Chicago Housing Authority Eases its Strict Position on Recreational Weed

The new recreational marijuana market in Chicago is still facing some challenges. However, the challenge of being restricted from consuming pot in accomodations that fall within the ambit of the Chiacgo Housing Authority is being addressed in light of the state law allowing recreational marijuana.

Marijuana consumers can now buy marijuana and smoke it at home. Previously, people living in subsidized housing facilities governed by federal law couldn’t smoke marijuana in their homes because as per federal law, cannabis is illegal.

Last year, sixty-three thousand households received warning letters for possible evictions for families found violating federal marijuana laws.

However, the Chicago Housing Authority board of commissioners passed a revised policy protecting people residing in subsidized housing. This was after the Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot pressured the CHA to implement a less heavy-handed approach.

According to the updated policy, each marijuana complaint would lead to a “consideration of relevant facts on a case-by-case basis.”

The updated policy also provides that the Chicago Housing Authority officials would work with people living in subsidized housing, participants, federal housing applicants, and landlords to make sure that they have the necessary information and guidance on how to exercise their rights under the local law without violating the federal law, which would lead to eviction.

Enlighten is a company that helps to provide the public as well as marijuana consumers with education about marijuana, and Jeremy Jacobs is its CEO.

Jacobs said that it is vital for the residents, as well as the applicants to note that when they are making their choices, they should make sure of the right they want to have, whether it is their state-protected rights or federal rights? For instance, some people live in subsidized housing but are medical marijuana consumers, and the federal regulators are responsible for controlling national housing.

You cannot be evicted from federal housing for possessing medical marijuana cards, and if you are a medical cannabis user, you can avoid being evicted by using marijuana offsite, maybe at a friend’s or a relative’s house. And, if you live in areas where recreational marijuana is legal, you can go to consumption lounges or vape bars.

Several people have been evicted from federal housing due to medical marijuana consumption. For instance, last year, a 78-year-old resident of Niagara Towers apartment, John Flickner, was ejected from his house for using a vaporizer to manage chronic pain. Another couple from Agawam, Massachusetts, Francine and Timothy Weinandy were evicted for smoking weed on their patio. Timothy is disabled while his wife suffers from cerebral white matter brain disease, which is a progressive disease that affects brain nerves.

Such examples illustrate the risks associated with staying in subsidized housing. However, experts think that the decision made by the Chicago Housing Authority to ease the restrictions on marijuana use will be welcomed by the entire cannabis industry, including players like HTC Extraction Systems (TSX.V: HTC) (OTCQB: HTPRF).
