420 with CNW — Missouri’s May Cannabis Sales Notch Record-Setting $135.1m

Missouri’s legal cannabis industry reached a new high in May, recording $135.07 million in sales and reinforcing its position as one of the stronger marijuana markets in the U.S. at a time when growth has stalled in several other states.

Figures released by the state’s Missouri Health and Senior Services Department show that recreational cannabis generated $124.24 million during the month, while medical cannabis contributed $10.83 million. The combined total marked the highest monthly revenue ever reported in the state, setting records for overall sales, adult-use purchases, and average daily revenue.

Industry data indicates that consumers are paying slightly less for cannabis products than they were a year ago. Analytics company Headset reported that the average item price declined from $28.79 in May 2025 to $26.61 in May 2026. At the same time, the number of products sold increased by 7.7% compared with the previous year.

According to Headset, the pricing trend may reflect a growing focus on affordability among shoppers. The firm suggested consumers could be making purchases more frequently while spending smaller amounts per transaction. Headset’s sales estimates were somewhat lower than those reported by state regulators.

Retail cannabis businesses averaged $4.36 million in revenue each day during May. That surpassed the previous monthly record established in April, when daily sales reached an average of $4.32 million.

The latest results underscore Missouri’s continued ability to expand even as many established cannabis markets face slowing demand. Although the rapid growth seen after recreational sales began in February 2023 has moderated, the state continues to post gains.

Compared with May of last year, total cannabis revenue increased 1.7% from $132.81 million. Recreational sales climbed 5.69%, rising from $117.55 million. Medical marijuana revenue moved in the opposite direction, dropping 29.03% from $15.26 million, further highlighting the shift toward adult-use products.

From January through May, Missouri retailers recorded $641.22 million in cannabis sales, up nearly 2% from the $628.58 million reported during the same period in 2025. Recreational purchases accounted for roughly 91% of that total, generating $582.46 million.

The strong start to 2026 follows a record year in 2025, when cannabis businesses across Missouri sold approximately $1.5 billion worth of products, a 4% increase over 2024.

Elsewhere, several markets have struggled to maintain previous levels of demand. Colorado reported marijuana sales of $1.32 billion in 2025, down from $1.4 billion the year before and well below its 2021 peak of $2.23 billion. Despite the decline, state officials are weighing a modest excise tax increase that would raise the total tax burden on legal cannabis purchases in cities such as Denver to 27%.

Michigan, meanwhile, reported $227 million in January revenue, nearly 16% lower than the $270 million recorded in December 2025.

For marijuana companies like Curaleaf Holdings Inc. (CSE: CURA) (OTCQX: CURLF) operating in Missouri and other states, the sales figures published by state authorities call for rethinking their marketing strategies so that the changing realities on the ground can be accounted for during efforts to drive sales.
