In less than a week, Americans across the country will mail in their ballots or visit local voting stations to determine the direction the United States will head in the near future. Apart from focusing on the presidential race and senate runs, you should also pay attention to the cannabis legalization votes, which will be happen in five states.
Polls may not be accurate, and reality tends to escape theory sometimes, but we’ve laid out a few predictions for the marijuana legalization votes in the five states.
Arizona
This will be the second time voters from the state will vote on a recreational cannabis measure. The measure, Proposition 207, will allow the use of marijuana recreationally as well for possession to persons who are 21 years of age or older. The proposition would also impose a 16% tax on cannabis sales.
Interestingly enough, states that failed in the adult-use cannabis legalization in the first attempt, such as Oregon and California, have been successful on the second try. Proposition 205 may have flopped during the 2016 election, but Proposition 207 may yet be the winner. We predict that the measure will pass with about 55% of the vote. After all, the second time’s a charm.
New Jersey
Voters from New Jersey will be deciding on whether to allow adult-use cannabis. The initiative, Public Question 1, would legalize adult-use cannabis cultivation as well as its processing and sale to individuals who are 21 years of age and older. It would also impose a state sales tax on retail cannabis sales but will not impose any additional excise tax.
Survey results released earlier this month show that 65% of state residents favor legislation. This is more than half of residents in the state, so the measure is likely to pass with ease.
South Dakota
Residents of the Mt. Rushmore State will be voting on separate medical cannabis and recreational measures. Measure 26 would develop medical cannabis programs for patients with severe medical conditions. On the other hand, Constitutional Amendment A would legalize recreational cannabis and impose a 15% tax on retail marijuana sales.
The No Way on A Committee released survey results gathered in June indicating that more than 70% of the respondents were pro Measure 26 and roughly 60% of the respondents were in favor of Amendment A. This could go both ways seeing as marijuana in the state is completely illegal at the moment; Amendment A may not pass by a small margin while Measure 26 will pass triumphantly.
Mississippi
Magnolia state residents will be choosing between Alternative 65A, which restricts marijuana smoking to terminally ill patients, and Initiative 65, which allows marijuana to be prescribed for more than 20 qualifying medical conditions. Survey results show 81% are in favor of both medical marijuana legalization and Initiative 65A, so it’s safe to say both laws should pass in a landslide.
Montana
Montana residents will vote on two initiatives: I-190 and CI-118. The former would allow those who are serving prison sentences for marijuana-related offenses to request resentencing and expunge cannabis-related convictions while also legalizing adult-use marijuana and establishing a 20% tax on its retail sales. The latter initiative is a constitutional amendment that would allow the state legislature to institute age 21 as the legal age for marijuana consumption.
Recent poll data shows that 49% of the those polled in the state were pro I-190 and 39% against it. I-190 may be passed by a slim margin of 52% to 48% or 51% to 49%.
